The trek
Overview
The Bagini Glacier trek leads through the remote Dronagiri valley, across glacial moraines and boulder fields, to a hanging glacier at 4,516m at the base of Changbang's north face. That granite wall rising above a fractured icefall is one of the most dramatic glacial views accessible to non-climbers in India — and there are virtually no crowds, just wilderness.
Right for you if
- You've slept above 4,000m without getting properly sick
- You're steady on loose boulders and moraine for hours at a time
- A week of tent camping with no lodges is fine
- You want Changabang's north face up close, on a trail few people walk
Think twice if
- Your ankles are weak: the last stretch to base camp is loose moraine with no trail
- You're going in Jul–Aug: monsoon landslides close the route
- You plan to go without a local guide: the upper trail is unmarked
Season
When to go
Spring: longer days and rhododendrons lower down. Snow can linger on high ground into May, and afternoons often bring cloud or a shower.
June: warm days and snowmelt streams running high in the afternoons. The monsoon can arrive in the second half of the month.
Autumn: the clearest skies and steadiest weather of the year. Nights get cold quickly from October, and early snow is possible in November.
