The trek
Overview
Bajre Dara is one of Sikkim's lesser-known winter treks, through dense rhododendron and oak forest, ancient monasteries and traditional Sikkimese villages to a high meadow ridgeline. Its winter views of the Kangchenjunga massif, framed by frost-silvered rhododendrons, are among the finest in Sikkim, and the near-total absence of other trekkers makes it feel entirely your own.
Right for you if
- You want a quiet Sikkim trek in winter, away from the Goechala crowds
- You can walk 5–6 hours a day with a daypack
- Winter camping is fine: nights below freezing, icy trail in Jan–Feb
- You'd like Yuksom's monasteries and villages along with Kangchenjunga views
Think twice if
- You hate being cold: it's a winter trek
- You want rhododendrons in bloom: that's spring, outside this trek's season
- Long drives make you sick: Bagdogra to Yuksom is 7–8 hours
Season
When to go
Winter: expect snow on the trail and camps well below freezing at night, often -10°C or colder near the top. Days are short and summit pushes start in the dark.
Spring: longer days and rhododendrons lower down. Snow can linger on high ground into May, and afternoons often bring cloud or a shower.
Autumn: the clearest skies and steadiest weather of the year. Nights get cold quickly from October, and early snow is possible in November.

Safety
Safety on this trek
- Altitude is the main risk. Don't go higher with symptoms; descend if they get worse.
- Ice on the trail in winter: put microspikes on early, not after the first slip.
- Stay between the leader and the sweep, and respect the turnaround time on summit or pass days.
- Signal is scarce beyond the roadhead. Share your itinerary and your operator's emergency number with someone at home.
