The trek
Overview
Chandrakhani Pass climbs steeply through deodar forest and alpine pasture from the Kullu Valley, with panoramic views of Deo Tibba, Indrasan and the Parvati Valley peaks and across the whole Kullu Valley from the top. It then descends into Malana, a village with its own distinct language, customs and self-governance — one of India's most isolated and culturally unique settlements, unlike anywhere else in the Himalaya.
Right for you if
- First Himalayan trek with one steep climb to 3,648m
- You can walk 5–6 hours a day with a daypack
- You're curious about Malana, a village with its own laws and customs
- You want Deo Tibba and the Pir Panjal from the pass
Think twice if
- You can't follow strict local rules: in Malana you must not touch walls, temples or people, and fines apply
- You're going in Jul–Aug: monsoon fog often hides the views
- You want high altitude or snow
Season
When to go
Spring: longer days and rhododendrons lower down. Snow can linger on high ground into May, and afternoons often bring cloud or a shower.
June: warm days and snowmelt streams running high in the afternoons. The monsoon can arrive in the second half of the month.
Monsoon (July and August): rain, cloud, leeches lower down and landslides on the drive in. Wildflowers are at their best. Pack serious rain gear and add a buffer day.
Autumn: the clearest skies and steadiest weather of the year. Nights get cold quickly from October, and early snow is possible in November.
