The trek
Overview
Doodhpathri — 'valley of milk' — is one of Kashmir's most spectacular yet least-visited high meadow destinations. Over 7 days you cross vast, unbroken meadows rolling green for miles beneath the Pir Panjal, shepherd-grazed grasslands, pine forest and milky glacial streams that give the valley its name. It's Kashmir at its most pastoral and peaceful, and the absence of tourist infrastructure keeps it wild.
Right for you if
- You want Kashmir's meadows without any altitude: it stays under 2,800m
- You can walk 6–7 hours a day on easy to moderate trails
- You'd like to see how Gujjar and Bakarwal shepherds live in summer
- Basic camping in remote valleys is fine
Think twice if
- You want snow peaks, glaciers or high passes
- You need phone signal: prepaid SIMs from outside J&K don't work there (postpaid does)
- You want any comforts: it's tents and shepherd huts
