The trek

Overview

Gaumukh is the snout of the Gangotri Glacier — the source of the holy Ganga. From there the trail climbs a boulder-strewn glacier tongue to Tapovan, a green oasis at 4,463m at the base of Shivling's south face, with Shivling, Bhagirathi I/II/III and Meru all within touching distance. That meeting of spiritual significance and raw mountain beauty is found nowhere else in India.

Right for you if

  • You've slept above 4,000m without getting properly sick
  • You're steady on loose moraine, including crossing the glacier to Tapovan
  • The source of the Ganga matters to you
  • Tent camping above Bhojbasa is fine: few beds, sub-zero nights

Think twice if

  • Your ankles are weak: the glacier section has no trail, only boulders
  • Rockfall makes you nervous: the stretch near Gaumukh's snout has loose rock above
  • You're going in Jul–Aug: monsoon washouts and rockfall
  • You'd go last-minute: national park permits are limited each day

Spring: longer days and rhododendrons lower down. Snow can linger on high ground into May, and afternoons often bring cloud or a shower.

June: warm days and snowmelt streams running high in the afternoons. The monsoon can arrive in the second half of the month.

Autumn: the clearest skies and steadiest weather of the year. Nights get cold quickly from October, and early snow is possible in November.
