The trek
Overview
Gulabi Kantha — 'pink ridge' — is named for the spring rhododendron bloom that turns entire hillsides deep pink against the white Gangotri peaks. From its 4,023m ridgeline the views sweep across Kedarnath, Kedardome and Meru, and as a relatively short, accessible route for its altitude, it's one of Uttarkashi's most rewarding moderate treks.
Right for you if
- You have only 5 days and want one big climb to 4,000m
- You can climb steeply for 5–6 hours with a daypack
- You want close views of Bandarpunch and Swargarohini
- Tent camping is fine: nights near freezing at the top, even in summer
Think twice if
- Long drives make you sick: Dehradun to Hanuman Chatti is 6–7 hours
- You're going in the monsoon: the steep trail gets slippery
Season
When to go
Spring: longer days and rhododendrons lower down. Snow can linger on high ground into May, and afternoons often bring cloud or a shower.
June: warm days and snowmelt streams running high in the afternoons. The monsoon can arrive in the second half of the month.
Autumn: the clearest skies and steadiest weather of the year. Nights get cold quickly from October, and early snow is possible in November.
