The trek

Overview

Hampta Pass is one of India's great trek contrasts: the Kullu side lush, green and flowery, the Spiti side barren, stark and Mars-like. The crossing at 4,298m joins the two worlds in a single dramatic day, and the landscape flips from green to bare brown in one step as you crest it — one of the sharpest ecological transitions in Himalayan trekking. Adding Chandratal makes it a complete experience.

Right for you if

  • You want your first pass crossing, starting from Manali
  • You can walk 5–7 hours a day, including one long snowy pass day
  • Wading knee-deep through cold streams is fine (poles help)
  • You want green Kullu turning into desert Lahaul in a day, often with Chandratal added

Think twice if

  • Cold-water stream crossings put you off: they're unavoidable on the Kullu side
  • You want solitude: it's Himachal's busiest pass trek in Jul–Aug

June: warm days and snowmelt streams running high in the afternoons. The monsoon can arrive in the second half of the month.

Monsoon (July and August): rain, cloud, leeches lower down and landslides on the drive in. Wildflowers are at their best. Pack serious rain gear and add a buffer day.

Autumn: the clearest skies and steadiest weather of the year. Nights get cold quickly from October, and early snow is possible in November.

Most operators run a shared pickup from Manali early on day one. Arrive the evening before so a late train or flight doesn't cost you the trek, and keep a buffer day at the end: mountain roads close for landslides and snow. Travel times are approximate.
