The trek
Overview
The Panch Kedar pilgrimage links five ancient Shiva temples across the Garhwal Himalaya — Kedarnath, Madmaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath and Kalpeshwar — over 12 days of remote villages, alpine meadows and sacred mountain landscape. Tungnath (3,680m), the world's highest Shiva temple, with Kedarnath and Chaukhamba behind it, is among the most powerful moments in Indian trekking, and the circuit connects Hindu mythology to Himalayan wilderness seamlessly.
Right for you if
- The five Shiva temples are the point: Kedarnath, Madhyamaheshwar, Tungnath, Rudranath, Kalpeshwar
- You can take 12 days off and walk 10 km or more on most of them
- Simple dharamshalas and village homestays are fine
- You can handle one hard day to Rudranath: close to 2,000m of climbing
Think twice if
- Crowds bother you: Kedarnath has huge pilgrim crowds in May–Jun
- You're going from late October: the temples close for winter
- You want a quiet wilderness trek: much of the way is a pilgrim route
Season
When to go
Spring: longer days and rhododendrons lower down. Snow can linger on high ground into May, and afternoons often bring cloud or a shower.
June: warm days and snowmelt streams running high in the afternoons. The monsoon can arrive in the second half of the month.
Autumn: the clearest skies and steadiest weather of the year. Nights get cold quickly from October, and early snow is possible in November.
