The trek

Overview

Pin Bhaba Pass (4,909m) connects the lush, forested Bhaba Valley in Kinnaur to the barren high-altitude Spiti Valley. The moment you crest it, the whole Spiti Valley unfolds below — a vast brown moonscape replacing the green forest behind — one of the most dramatic transformations and greatest reveals in Indian trekking.

Right for you if

  • You've slept above 4,000m on a trek before
  • You can cross snowfields in microspikes and come down a long, steep scree slope
  • You want green Kinnaur forest on one side and Spiti's desert on the other
  • You can take 8 days off, plus a long drive to Kafnu

Think twice if

  • Your knees hate long descents: the Spiti side is steep scree
  • It's your first Himalayan trek
  • Cold river crossings scare you: the Bhaba streams run high in July

Monsoon (July and August): rain, cloud, leeches lower down and landslides on the drive in. Wildflowers are at their best. Pack serious rain gear and add a buffer day.

Autumn: the clearest skies and steadiest weather of the year. Nights get cold quickly from October, and early snow is possible in November.

Safety

Safety on this trek

  • Altitude is the main risk. Don't go higher with symptoms; descend if they get worse.
  • Streams rise in the afternoon and after rain. Cross early, and turn back if it looks too fast.
  • Stay between the leader and the sweep, and respect the turnaround time on summit or pass days.
  • Signal is scarce beyond the roadhead. Share your itinerary and your operator's emergency number with someone at home.
