The trek

Overview

The Valley of Flowers is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — an 87.5 sq km alpine meadow in the Zanskar range where over 500 species of wildflowers bloom in the monsoon. In July–August it's a wall-to-wall carpet of Himalayan blue poppy, Brahmakamal, cobra lily and hundreds more, with nowhere else on Earth like it. Combined with the sacred Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara at 4,329m, it is one of India's most spiritually and botanically extraordinary treks.

Right for you if

  • Walking in rain is fine: the valley is only open in the monsoon, Jul–Sep
  • You can walk about 13 km uphill to Ghangaria, then do day hikes from there
  • Lodge beds suit you: you stay in Ghangaria village, not in tents
  • You want the flowers at their peak: late July to mid-August
  • Hemkund Sahib is an optional hard day: about 1,200m of steep climbing to 4,329m

Think twice if

  • Your dates can't move: monsoon landslides often block the road to Govindghat
  • You want to camp in the valley: overnight stays inside the park aren't allowed
  • Your knees hate long descents and you plan to do Hemkund: the way down is steep

Autumn: the clearest skies and steadiest weather of the year. Nights get cold quickly from October, and early snow is possible in November.
